The renowned publisher has appointed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure notified team members about this organizational change through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a distinct vision.
Ismailer noted that the team is now refining the project with a renewed vision, aiming to address gamer demands.
The news echoes a similar step taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the entire text from the president's communication:
Dear Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and creative developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to continue.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was revealing. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a clearer identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the feedback to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed direction - one that’s poised to deliver on its ambition to our players.
Our confidence in this project grows every day. To boost the remarkable development you’ve made, I’m excited to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of 31st Union. Following several months of talks, Ben starts with us on Monday, October 20.
His guidance and experience in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years developing and managing some of the most well-known franchises in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in greeting him next week. We are all eager to persist observing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to follow.
David
Brinkman presently serves in the role of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
The upcoming game was revealed in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Then, the developers portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch explains. "Challenge the rivals with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that evolve every round. Will you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, risk it all, and trust your team can earn top ranking? The choice is up to you."
The game lacks an announced release date or platforms, but enthusiasts can look forward to further news as production progresses.
