Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
